Pedalite Update - Let there be (Pedal)lite

News Posted: 30 Oct 2007

A white jiffy bag landed on my desk this morning - always an exciting moment - more so when it contains flashing LED pedals powered by uber hi tech kinetic energy generation equipment.

Above: Pedal on...

On first examination I was impressed. Robust looking wide platforms with metal studs for grip . I gave the axles a twist with my fingers and, oh yes, Let There be Light.

Later on the same day I hastily removed the old pedals on SS Everyday Cycling - my all weather test rig, and spannered-on the Pedalites. Job done, and a quick spin to the shops for a loaf and some milk.

First impressions?

No discernable drag, flashing light in all directions, which continues for a good few minutes after getting back, lighting my hallway with an almost festive ambience, or on a more practical level, staying lit when you're stuck in the middle of a busy, dark road trying to do a right turn.

The only thing that I'm having to get used to so far is the fact that they are, strictly speaking, a single sided pedal. This isn't a biggie really, especially if you've got flat, rubbery soles on your trainers. You can push off on the 'non-pedalling' side without much drama and then just lift your foot and let the pedal rotate to its right side. Pedalite also market their own custom toeclips that work with the system, should the fancy take you.

So the sum up, so far so good. Great light levels, the promise of battery free nirvana and a pair of pedals that work, erm, just like a pair of pedals should.

We'll get back to you after a few months of salty winter roads and general abuse to see how they get on.
