The Liverpool Chester Liverpool Bike Ride takes place on Sunday, 6th July 2008 and organisers are hoping to attract over 2,500 cyclists.

The event, now in its 15th year, attracts cyclists of all abilities and gives them a chance to ride through the Queensway Tunnel - without any other traffic!

This year, organisers expect the cyclists to raise more than £20,000 for their favoured charities including the official charity of the event, Barnardo's. Barnardo's is providing refreshments for cyclists at the halfway point.

The Kingsway Tunnel will remain open to traffic throughout.

Cyclists can chose one of three rides:

  • A full round trip from Liverpool to Chester and back to Liverpool (54 miles)
  • Liverpool to Chester only (30 miles)
  • Liverpool to Thornton and back to Liverpool (25 miles)

Mark Sandamas, Director of organisers Pennine Events, said: "This is the largest bike ride in Merseyside. It's an opportunity for cyclists of all abilities to enjoy a day's cycling through beautiful countryside, make some new friends and raise some money for either their favourite charity or the official event charity Barnardo's."

Dr. Paula Grey, Joint Director of Public Health, said: "The Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride continues to grow in popularity and is a

great way for families and individuals to get active. Participants have a

really good day out whilst at the same time experiencing the many benefits which come from physical activity."

"A new innovation for this year's event is the many information points which will be available close to the start line. These include stands providing details of how to lead a healthier lifestyle and be active regularly."

"On behalf of the PCT and the Liverpool: Active City initiative I would like to encourage people of all ages to participate in the Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride."

Councillor Ken McGlashan of sponsors Merseytravel, added: "We are delighted to support this event, which will take place the month after our own Under and Over the Mersey Tunnel walkthrough on June 15th.

"It offers us a great opportunity to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy and enjoyable activity. For many it will be a day to remember - an opportunity for people to ride through the Queensway Tunnel."

Cyclists can enter on-line at www.pennineevents.co.uk. They must be at least ten years old. Entry to the ride is £15 per individual or £56 per team of four. Entry fee includes a quality tee shirt. For further information about the ride, please visit the website www.pennineevents.co.uk, ring Pennine Events on 01695 682020 or email alison@pennineevents.co.uk.

Closing date for entry is 27th June 2008.

Drivers are reminded that on the day of the event, Queensway Tunnel is closed from 7.30am to 4pm.
