The Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge built on last years' massive success this weekend (14 June) with more than 1,600 riders signing up to to test themselves on 31, 62 and 100 mile routes.
Riders were treated to perfect cycling weather for the event - a warm day with light breezes and more than a hint of sunshine - which helped to coax them through the countryside from the start at Newcastle Falcons' rugby ground and around the beautiful nearby Northumberland countryside.

All three well designed routes gave a taste of the racing to come the following day by taking in part of the route used for the Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar road race. The 31 miles route was designed with families and those just who want to enjoy the countryside in mind. With total climbing over the route of 1280ft (390m) it took in a variety of quiet country lanes lined with wild flowers and with views of the surrounding countryside.
The 62 mile route was put together with more serious cyclists looking for a challenge in mind. Taking in many parts of the tough 100 mile route previous training was necessary for most taking part to tackle the 3,993ft (1217 metres) of climbing.
The 100 mile route provided a real challenge for fit and experienced cyclists. The hilly route tested riders with eight tough climbs, taking them up on to exposed moors with a total of 7,789ft (2374m) of climbing.
The smiles at the finish line proved once again why the sportive ride format of the Northern Rock Cyclone - which provides a challenge for all ages and abilities and allows participants to ride at their own pace - is continuing to gain in popularity amongst riders of all bikes from sleek road bikes to full on downhill mountain bikes.
Combined with Friday night's criterium race and top quality racing in the Premier Calendar on the Sunday, the Northern Rock cyclone deserves to continue to gain in popularity and makes a good excuse for Everyday Cyclists to make the journey from far and wide for a weekend of cycling indulgence.
