20080630_round_the_forth_250Sustrans volunteers were out in force last week signing-posting a new extensions to a spectacular cross border walk and cycle route along the East Lothian coast to prepare for its official unveiling.

The Round the Forth route - part of the National Cycle Network - is being extended from Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed to boost sustainable travel and tourism. It will also become part of the North Sea Cycle Route, a 3,750-mile route that passes through eight countries bordering the North Sea.

Three teams of volunteer rangers for the sustainable transport charity Sustrans put up signs along 34 miles of new sections between Dunbar and Berwick ahead of the route's official opening later this summer. They hope the groundwork will inspire more volunteers to come forward to help maintain it.

Sarah Jeffs, Sustrans Volunteer Ranger Coordinator for Scotland, said: "It is great that our dedicated volunteers have offered up an entire day to get these new sections ready in time for their official launch. This is the first cross-border signing we have ever attempted and I'm sure it will be a lot of fun.

"As yet we don't have any volunteer rangers assigned to these extensions so we really need more people who live along the East Lothian coast to come on board. It is going to be a beautiful new route, much of which will run alongside stunning coastal scenery."

The three groups set out from Dunbar train station, Old Cambus and Berwick to cycle and sign the route before meeting up in Eyemouth to celebrate their hard work. For more information on becoming a Sustrans volunteer Ranger, visit www.sustrans.org.uk and click on 'Support Sustrans'.
