During the first week of July this year, over 8,000 people joined sustainable transport charity Sustrans' Change Your World campaign and swapped a car trip and walked, cycled, used public transport or car-shared instead. Sustrans sends a huge thank you to everyone who played their part to reduce car traffic and create a world with quieter roads, cleaner air and more space for everyone to enjoy. If everyone made one less car journey a week then car traffic would be reduced by ten per cent.
Many organisations and local authorities joined Sustrans in the campaign, including, Good Energy, I Count, The Association of Cycle Traders, The Council for National Parks, The Big Green Switch, Chain Reaction Cycles, Madison, Liftshare, Halfords, the Woodland Trust, the Caravan Club, Centro (Network West Midlands) and Abel & Cole. And last weekend's Glastonbury Festival also encouraged a changed world with hundreds of festival goers-making a pledge to swap.
Sustrans will now let Gordon Brown know how many people joined the campaign and will be calling on the government to make sustainable transport a higher priority so people can choose more often to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment. Change Your World will be back next year from 29 June-4 July 2009.
