20080724_lcc_logoLONDONERS are being asked to nominate the capital's best cycling projects with the launch of the London Cycling Awards 2008.

The awards, run by the London Cycling Campaign (LCC), aim to recognise and celebrate the greatest contributions to the growth of cycling in the capital. Anyone can nominate a cycling project or facility for an award - self nominations are welcome.

The categories for this year's nominations are:

  • Best Cycle Facility
  • Best Community Cycling Initiative
  • Best Cycling Initiative for Young People or Children
  • Best Workplace Cycling Initiative.

"It might be an employer who has launched an innovative scheme to get people cycling or it could be a project to help people with disabilities gain confidence on their bikes," said Tom Bogdanowicz, campaigns manager at LCC. "Many cycling projects that have been launched in the last year are very exciting and we are keen they get the recognition they deserve."

Last year's award winners were the Signing In Deaf Club who help deaf children to cycle, Wandsworth Cyclists Movers and Shakers project, Hackney Council for its "permeability" projects which removed obstacles to cycling, and a workplace cycling initiative promoted by Transport for London.

Nominations can be made by an organisation involved in a scheme or anyone who considers a project or facility should be nominated for an award. The awards will be presented at LCC's AGM on November 19th.

Details on how to submit a nomination can be found on LCC's website www.lcc.org.uk. The deadline for nominations is Friday October 24th 2008
