Product Focus: YAKKAY Helmet

Posted: 18 Aug 2008

20080818_yakkay_paris_150At an early point in our cycling careers, most of us make the decision to 'wear or bare' - our heads, that is.

Here at Everyday Cycling we strongly recommend wearing an approved helmet every time you ride. And there are some stylish lids out there. However, there are precious few designs out there that let you blend into urban environment, with most designed with the word SPORT very firmly at the forefront.

Step forward the YAKKAY helmet, which for the first time combines safety and style in one product. Ever been in a quandary whether to wear your lid or your beanie hat? Now you can do both with the YAKKAY, which combines a skate style lid with a range of clever covers to produce a helmet that young, stylish types might actually be see dead in (or should that be alive?)

Lending a little from horsey-types' helmets, where you've got a hard shell topped with a fabric cover, you can choose from four styles including, beany, Fidel style, sunhat or another one called Dublin which I can't really describe (look at the pic). You get an easy to adjust buckle system and a range of pads to tailor the fit.

Above: Hard shell lid + choice of cool covers = Yakkay. Why hasn't anyone done this before?

Any product that enhances safety whilst 'normalising' cycling at the same time has to be a winner. For me is solves the old dilemma that racks me every time I ride. Fidel hat or helmet? Style or safety? Seems that now you don't have to make that choice. The YAKKAY could just be something that will tempt helmet-phobics to buckle up and join up.

Now here's the bad news. There are no UK distributors listed on the website right now but we think it's only a matter of time.
