Book: Ten Lessons from the Road - Alastair Humphreys

20090325_humphreys_ten_lessons_coverBeginning in August 2001, Alastair Humphreys spent four years cycling around the globe. His time on the road, much of it alone, taught him a great deal about himself and gave him a very different perspective of the world.

His four-year journey took him across five continents and through sixty different countries, with each day bringing new challenges and experiences. On a shoe-string budget - just seven thousand pounds of saved student loans - he supplemented his trip by giving motivational talks about his journey along the way.

Alastair has continued these lectures back in the UK, with great success, and has distilled his wisdom into ten simple lessons to inspire others to take up a challenge in their lives, whatever it may be. These lessons form the basis of Ten Lessons from the Road, a beautifully designed book packed with stunning photographs from his trip and quotes to inspire even the most reluctant adventurer.

Ten Lessons from the Road is a rugged, no-nonsense self-help book which the reader can pick up whenever they need a reminder that no ambition is too outrageous! These lessons can be applied to any goal in life - whether it be walking to work each day or climbing Mount Everest.

Since his return, Alastair has continued his quest for adventure. First he completed the Marathon des Sables, the 'toughest race on earth', running 150 miles through the Sahara Desert (finishing in the top ten British runners, despite breaking his foot during the race).

Then last month he rowed the English Channel with Major Phil Packer, a soldier who was paralyzed in Iraq and is taking on various challenges to raise a million to support injured soldiers through the Help for Heroes charity.

And on Monday 23rd March, Alastair is set off to walk up the Kavari river in India from coast to source and back down to the west coast, a journey of about 500 miles. He is also in the midst planning his next great adventure, which will take place later this year, to complete the first unassisted return journey to the South Pole.

Alastair has also written Around the world by Bike (in two parts, Moods of Future Joys and Thunder and Sunshine), an account of his journey of 46,000 miles in what Sir Ranulph Fiennes describes as "the first great adventure of the new Millennium".

Through his adventures, Alastair raises money for Hope and Homes for Children. Has recently spearheaded the Bike It! Campaign for sustainable transport (SUSTRANS) encouraging kids, parents and teachers to bicycle to school.

Ten Lessons from the Road by Alastair Humphreys will be published by Eye Books in March 2009, priced £9.99. (ISBN: 978-1-903070-64-2)
