Cycling as a Solution: National Conference in Manchester to promote benefits of cycling
On Saturday 30 May, Manchester will host the national CTC/CycleNation Cycling as a Solution conference which is focusing on how local communities, councils and NHS Trusts can work together to increase the number of people cycling to work, school, to the shops or for leisure.
Cycling can help people respond positively to key challenges such as climate change, the recession, style/well-being; beating traffic congestion and achieving a healthier lifestyle.
Key speakers include:
Koy Thomson, Chief Executive of the London Cycling Campaign which has helped nearly double the number of people, particularly young women, who now regularly cycle in the capital.
Amy Fleuriot, co-founder of Cyclodelic - bicycle bling for geared up girls, a response to the lack of stylish yet functional bicycle wear for women. London College of Fashion graduate, Amy is helping to change the lycra-lad image of cycling and will bring a touch of style to the conference. Cyclodelic now sells inside Topshop's flagship store on Oxford Street.
Joe Mellor, a health professional who practises what he preaches, cycles daily to work in the operating theatres of St James Hospital, Leeds and also co-ordinates Spokes, the NHS Cyclists network.
Increased levels of active travel, walking and cycling, can help control weight and protect people from a range of diseases including arthritis, depression, diabetes and heart disease.
Other speakers include: Bruce Macdonald, SQW Consulting / Cycle England, Richard George, Campaign for Better Transport and Juliet Jardine, CTC.
There will also be a range of workshops that will help provide both new & experienced cycle campaigners with the skills to get more done locally and nationally. Including sessions on: fundraising, cycling policy, getting more out of the media , making the business case for cycling, working with the local community and how to get local business on board.
The Conference is being held at the Friends Meeting House on Saturday 30th May at Mount Street, City Centre from 10am to 5pm.
The fee for the conference is £20, which includes delegate pack, refreshments and lunch.
