From the Community: Inspiring Stories
Posted: 19 Aug 2008
The Cycling for Fitness group on Everyday Cycling Community is yielding some really inspiring stories from new and born again cyclists who are using the bike as a way of turning back the clock, shedding the pounds, beating stress, saving cash and reclaiming their former fitness. Here are some snippets from the discussion:
AB: I'm a 34 year old worried that all the beer & pies have taken far to hefty a toll on my body! I've recently stopped a 17 year smoking habit, bought a bike and want to be fit, well, fitter. I've started out at 112.5kgs aka large. I'll post progress and updates and hope to learn from others better ways to ride, better ways to use cycling to improve my health and take it from there :)
CCW: Best of luck with that. I started last year weighing 111Kg at 45 after a lifetime of beer and pies. within 6 months of cycling I had managed to get down to 98Kg without eating any less, just cut out a lot of the chocolate and crisps. a year later I am eating far more but now weigh 90Kg and feel a lot healthier for it, and rode the London to Brighton this year. keep at it, it gets easier
PS: Same here really. Sedantry desk job and not the most active lifestyle had left me carrying more weight than I was happy with. What kicked me off really is that my 2 young kids (4 and 18 months) were starting to run me ragged and I was having trouble keeping up! been commuting for 4 months now, enjoying it immensely, helped in part by great support from friends and workmates I now commute 18 miles a day and I'm really starting to feel the benefits of it :)
AB: I'm a lot happier to jump on my bike than get in the car and I'd happily admit I've not had to fill the car up with petrol for some time now! I hadn't really factored that in but all the small journeys used to add up I guess, it's better now burning lbs rather than pounds sterling!
JH: keep it up guys, I am 21 and weigh 80 kilos and am cycling up to 50 miles at a time. But I remember when I started out a few months ago an it was hard and I wanted to give up, but dont!!! stay at it and you will see a lot of change
